What NOT to do when you go hiking

A few weekends ago Eric and I had a rare day where we were both off work and didn't have any other plans. So as we sat around wasting our day away we decided we wanted to go to a park. But not the good ole neighborhood park but we wanted to go to a grand state park.

We had heard of Pedernales Falls State Park and decided to go. I had a general idea of where it was and figured I could call the park's info center on the way and get exact directions. Since this was a spur of the moment trip we did not plan very well and learned a few 'hard' lessons along the way. Here is my list of things NOT to do if you decide to take a radom unplanned trip to a state park in the middle of no where in late spring in Texas.

1. Don't bring the fancy CamelBak (which is made to hold water) but not fill it up.
2. Don't ask Eric to go fill up said CamelBak or get something to drink for the hike (because you might end up with a cooler full of Dr. Pepper... which doesn't really quench thirst... just leaves me more thirsty).
3. Don't leave your house to drive to a state park in the middle of no where (over 40 miles away) and not know exactly where you are going.
4. Don't rely on your phone to assist you in getting directions to said state park out in the middle of no where.
5. Don't leave for a state park (out in the middle of no where) and not have a full tank of gas or even just a half tank of gas... or if you only have a quarter of a tank of gas at least stop BEFORE you get to a deserted stretch of freeway.
6. If you plan on taking a 2 and a half hour hike eat before you go or bring snacks, don't count on food being readily available at the park.
7. Don't forget the sunscreen...
8. Even if you don't care about having water for yourself, at least care enough to bring water for your dog.
9. When the park ranger asks if you want a map of the park don't turn them down and say something to the affect: "Aw we don't need a map we are here for an adventure."
10. Stick to the well defined trail... don't wonder off into uncharted territories.
11. And last but not least have fun and realize that life is just an adventure.

Eric and I always seem to have adventures (or misadventures as Eric puts them). But no matter what we are laughing and having a great time together along the way!

Carrying the EMPTY CamelBak and cooler full of Dr. Pepper:
Eric and I thought this rock crater was sooo cool because it was in
the shape of a heart (I know we are huge nerds)!
Mo decided to take things into his own 'paws' (hehe) to try and cool off.
A baby palm tree
It was so beautiful!
